Young Academy in Review / 2008-2012

In 2007, the Brazilian Academy of Sciences simultaneously achieved two essential ideas: reinvigorate itself with the presence of our most distinguished young scientific talents added as Affiliate Members, and contribute to an important decentralization of national science, with the creation of Regional Vice-Presidencies.

Following a positive initial experimental phase, these initiatives were written in to the Statutes of the Academy in 2009, with the approval of the majority of the Full Members. Regional Vice-Presidencies were created for the North, Northeast & ES, Minas Gerais and Central West, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and the South, who took on the responsibility of electing up to five Affiliate Members per Region each year, each one for a period of five years, non-renewable.

The Affiliate Members brought new life to the Academy: they actively participate in their two main annual meetings, sharing their scientific-technological conquests and debating, with the Full and Corresponding Members, the paths for science in our Country.

To celebrate the completion of its first five years of existence, the Academy promoted a Symposium "Science, Technology and Innovation: Visions of the Young Academy", in 2011, and had the pleasure of initiating a series of publications about these outstanding young Brazilian scientists.
