O que é um Gene ?

Em 2001, um dos resultados mais surpreendentes do Projeto Genoma Humano foi a descoberta de que nós temos quase a mesma quantidade de genes que um verme ou uma mosca de frutas. Hoje, oito anos depois, isto ainda continua válido? Sim, entretanto o que mudou foi a definição do que é um gene. Nesta palestra iremos discutir a definição atual do que é um gene através de dados experimentais, computacionais e de projetos de anotação gênica, tais como o ENCODE.

Quantum theory has allowed physicists to understand in depth the microscopic world. Its many applications have revolutionized our lives. And yet, despite all its successes, quantum physics seems strange and counterintuitive. Recent technological advances have allowed us to investigate this strangeness in details by manipulating isolated quantum systems such as atoms, molecules, photons or superconducting microchips. Beyond their fundamental interest, these studies open fascinating perspectives for applications. We dream about quantum cryptography, teleportation and quantum computing. Which – if any – of these applications will become practical remains an open question. What is certain is that the ongoing exploration of the strange laws of the quantum world is bound to yield many more surprises and reasons to wonder about Nature.
