The IAP-Science for Poverty Eradication Committee (IAP-SPEC) Conference on “Science-Based Solutions for Poverty Eradication and Sustainable Development: Science Academies working together to tackle SDGs 1 and 10”, was hosted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and took place in Beijing, on 9-10 December, 2017. The meeting was organized by the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) in partnership with the Institutes of Science and Development, CAS (CASISD) and IAP-SPEC, and supported by the IAP-Research (IAP-R).
Created in 2013, this committee is chaired by ABC and aims to discuss strategies to engage the Science Academies of the entire planet in the efforts towards poverty eradication and sustainable development. To provide a more clear focus to SPEC, BAS and CAS have agreed that the workshop should concentrate on how Science Academies can contribute to the implementation of SDGs 1 (No Poverty) and 10 (Reduced Inequalities) of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. Under the theme “Science-Based Solutions for Poverty Eradication and Sustainable Development: Science Academies Working together to Tackle SDGs,” the meeting joined together experts from Science Academies from the Americas, Africa, Asia and Europe to work out potential comprehensive solutions for poverty eradication and inequality reduction.
The whole meeting was arranged into five sessions of panel discussions, respectively focusing on five specific issues, namely: 1) Developing new programs and identifying best policies and strategies to end poverty; 2) Implementing social protection systems and measures covering the poor and the vulnerable; 3) Organizing and mobilizing society and resources towards the ending of poverty; 4) Fostering equal opportunities and developing programs to empower the poor; and 5) Improving scientific input to promote human development. The discussion of each session, lasting for 30 minutes, was informed by two 20-minute lectures given by experts from different countries and research areas.
The third IAP-SPEC Conference will take place in Rio de Janeiro, on 27-29 March, 2019. The goal of this meeting will be to assemble renowned experts to discuss, motivate and help mobilize the scientific community to contribute to the paramount effort of building a sustainable planet, with more equality, peace and prosperity.
A Academia Brasileira de Ciências (ABC), em parceria com a Academia Chinesa de Ciências e o Comitê pela Erradicação da Pobreza da Rede Global de Academias de Ciências (IAP), promoveu nos dias 9 e 10 de dezembro, em Pequim (China), a Conferência Internacional “Science-Based Solutions for Poverty Eradication and Sustainable Development: Science Academies working together to tackle SDGs 1 and 10”. O encontro, que reuniu representantes de Academias de Ciências das Américas, África, Ásia e Europa, discutiu a utilização da ciência e da inovação tecnológica para a erradicação da pobreza e a redução das desigualdades.
Criado em 2013, o Comitê pela Erradicação da Pobreza da IAP é presidido pela ABC. O grupo tem por objetivo debater estratégias visando engajar as Academias de Ciências do mundo nos esforços em prol da erradicação da pobreza e redução das desigualdades, no âmbito da implementação da Agenda 2030 para o Desenvolvimento Sustentável, estabelecida pela Organização das Nações Unidas (ONU). Os debates que se desenvolveram na conferência em Pequim foram guiados por dois eixos. O primeiro procurou discutir o desafio de “Como pode a ciência contribuir para acabar com a pobreza em todas as suas formas e em todos os lugares” (Objetivo do Desenvolvimento Sustentável 1) e, o segundo, se debruçou sobre a questão de “Como pode a ciência contribuir para reduzir a desigualdade dentro dos países e entre eles” (Objetivo do Desenvolvimento Sustentável 10).
Para os representantes das Academias de Ciências presentes no evento, já é evidente que as Academias contribuem de forma efetiva em temáticas relacionadas a vários dos Objetivos do Desenvolvimento Sustentável (ODS), tais como na atuação em frentes como segurança alimentar e hídrica, saúde, educação, energia, mudanças climáticas, biodiversidade. No entanto, não parece ser tão claro ainda o potencial de contribuição da ciência para o alcance dos objetivos de se acabar com a pobreza (ODS 1) e de se reduzir a desigualdade no mundo (ODS 10).
Ao reconhecer serem estes os objetivos os de maior relevância, tanto do ponto de vista da sustentabilidade do planeta como como do ponto de vista ético, a ABC tem liderado globalmente um esforço de sensibilização das Academias de Ciências. Nesse sentido, a instituição tem convocado as Academias a se envolverem nos processos nacionais de implementação e monitoramento dos ODS. A ABC tem também pedido para que as Academias deem atenção especial aos ODS 1 e 10, que usualmente não estariam no campo de intervenção mais direta das Academias de Ciências do mundo.
A terceira conferência do IAP-SPEC foi realizada no Rio de Janeiro, em março de 2019.
