Professor Titular na Universidade de Nevada Las Vegas, em Las Vegas, Nevada, desde 1993. Mudou-se para os Estados Unidos em 1992, após ser docente da Universidade de Brasília (UnB), desde 1975. Foi bolsista visitante em várias instituições nos Estados Unidos, Itália , Portugal, Espanha, China e Austrália. No Brasil, também serviu a comunidade matemática tanto como Tesoureiro e Vice-Presidente da Sociedade Brasileira de Matemática (SBM), bem como membro do Comitê Consultivo do Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa do Brasil (CNPq).
Possui um Ph.D. Graduado em Matemática pela Brown University obtido em 1973 sob a orientação do Prof. Walter Strauss e, antes disso, formado em Engenharia Elétrica em 1967 pela Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, em Recife, Brasil.
Seus principais interesses de pesquisa são em Equações Diferenciais Parciais (EPDs), particularmente através do uso de métodos variacionais e topológicos de Análise Não Linear.

I have been a Full Professor since 1993 at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
I moved with my family to the United States in 1992, after being a faculty at the Universidade de Brasilia, in Brasilia, Brazil, since 1975. During my permanence in Brazil, I was a visiting scholar at various institutions in the United States, Italy, Portugal, Spain, China, and Australia. In Brazil, I also served the mathematical community both as Treasurer and Vice President of the Brazilian Mathematical Society (SBM), as well as member of the Advisory Committee of the National Research Council of Brazil (CNPq).
I have a Ph.D. degree in Mathematics from Brown University obtained in 1973 under the supervision of Prof. Walter Strauss and, prior to that, an Electrical Engineering degree in 1967 from the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, in Recife, Brazil.
My main research interests are in Partial Differential Equations (PDEs), particularly through the use of variational and topological methods from Nonlinear Analysis.
